Thunderstorms After Hot Weather: Car Safety Tips for UK Drivers
May 26, 2026

Hot weather followed by thunderstorms can change driving conditions quickly. Roads may become slippery after a dry spell, heavy rain can reduce visibility, and surface water can appear suddenly on familiar routes.

Why today?? weather matters

The Met Office forecast for Tuesday 26 May 2026 highlighted isolated severe thunderstorms fading through the evening after very hot weather, with some areas seeing lightning, hail, gusty winds or intense rain. Drivers do not need to overreact, but they should check the forecast and prepare for slower journeys.

Thunderstorm driving checklist

  • Check wipers and screenwash before setting off
  • Slow down early when heavy rain reduces visibility
  • Avoid driving through flood water if depth or road condition is unclear
  • Leave more distance from the vehicle in front
  • Keep headlights and windows clear
  • Carry water in hot weather and allow time for breaks
  • Keep a torch, power bank and compact escape tool within reach

Keep emergency items within reach

A car safety kit is more useful when the most important items are easy to reach from the seat. A torch, phone power bank, high-visibility clothing and a compact escape tool should not be buried under luggage in the boot.

A JUFO window breaker and seatbelt cutter is a small part of a wider emergency kit. It is designed to be stored close to the seat, so it is available if a driver or passenger needs it in a serious emergency.

Shop the JUFO Single Tool or choose the JUFO 2 Pack for family cars and multi-car households.

Before the next journey

Check your route, fuel or charge level, tyre condition, coolant, screenwash and weather forecast before setting off. If plans change, update someone who is expecting you and avoid rushing the journey.
